A "jiffy" is an actual unit of time for 1/100 of a second.

Historically, a jiffy has referred to various units of time. In physics it has been used to mean the amount of time it takes for light to travel a centimeter or the time it takes light to travel one fermi (the size of a nucleon). The word is thought to originally be thieves' secret code for lightning.
