The actor who portrayed the "Marlboro Man" died of lung cancer.

Wayne McLaren died at the young age of 51. After hearing he had cancer, he embarked on a massive anti-smoking campaign. Some TV spots showed him in a hospital bed, covered in tubes, saying, "Lying there with all those tubes, how independent can you really be?" The Philip Morris company initially denied McLaren had ever appeared in the company's ads, but retracted the claim.

Another Marlboro actor, David McLean, also died of cancer, and his widow filed a wrongful death suit against the company. She claimed he was required to smoke 5 packs a day to achieve the 'right look' in the ads.
